Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, the One Piece Elder

Updated · 4 min read

In One Piece, Saturn refers to Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, one of the five members of the Gorosei, the Five Elders who are the highest visible authority of the World Government. He has appeared in Eiichiro Oda's manga since the early 2000s without a name, and received his full name in 2023 along with the title "Warrior God of Science and Defense." He plays a central role in the Egghead arc, where he goes up against Vegapunk and Luffy's crew. Like his four colleagues, he is named after one of the five planets visible to the naked eye.

The Gorosei, the shadow government

The Gorosei show up early in the manga: five old men in dark clothes who, from Pangaea Castle in Mary Geoise, make the World Government's gravest decisions, appointing or removing Warlords, ordering Marine operations and erasing inconvenient information. For more than twenty years of publication Oda kept them nameless. Readers identified them by their looks, and speculation about what they really were fueled the fandom.

The Reverie arc (2018) shifted the picture: it showed them bowing before an even higher figure, Imu, seated on the Empty Throne that supposedly belongs to no one. The Gorosei are not the summit after all, but the agents of a hidden power.

Saturn, the group's scientist

Saturn's title, Warrior God of Science and Defense, makes him responsible for the government's scientific and military programs. That is what ties him to Dr. Vegapunk, the world's greatest scientist, who works for the government on the futuristic island of Egghead. Vegapunk's research, from the Pacifistas to the Seraphim and technology derived from the bloodlines of giants and Lunarians, serves the government's military power, and Saturn oversees it.

That role explains the personality the Egghead arc reveals: contemptuous, calculating, treating human beings as experimental material.

The planetary naming of the Elders

When the Gorosei's full names were revealed, readers spotted the pattern at once: Saturn, Mars, Warcury (Mercury), V. Nusjuro (Venus) and Ju Peter (Jupiter). These are the five planets known since antiquity and visible without a telescope; Uranus and Neptune were only discovered by telescope, in 1781 and 1846. The group's Japanese name, Gorosei, literally means "five elder stars."

Giving the name Saturn to the most menacing Elder is no accident. Saturn is the most distant and slowest of the ancient planets, and tradition made it a figure of authority, time and old age. The god Saturn, identified with the Greek Cronus, devoured his own children to hold on to power, an obvious echo for a ruler willing to sacrifice anyone to preserve the established order, and the subject of Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son. In alchemy, Saturn is lead, the heaviest and basest metal. And in English the planet gives its name to Saturday.

The Egghead arc (spoilers)

Spoiler warning: this section reveals events from the Egghead arc (manga 2022–2024, adapted in the anime from 2024). Skip to the FAQ if you are not caught up.

At Egghead, Saturn leaves Mary Geoise to oversee in person the elimination of Vegapunk, accused of treason. He arrives with the Marine forces, including Admiral Kizaru, and finds Luffy's crew on the island. For the first time, an Elder fights directly: Saturn proves to have extraordinary regenerative power and transforms into a gigantic creature modeled on the ushi-oni, a yokai from Japanese folklore with a bovine head and a spider's body. He can also freeze his opponents through sheer intimidation.

Bartholomew Kuma's memories, relived by his daughter Jewelry Bonney, reveal that Saturn oversaw Kuma's conversion into a cyborg and treated father and daughter with chilling cruelty, making him one of the most hated villains in the series. Later in the arc the other four Elders join him on the island, summoned from afar, and reveal monstrous forms of their own.

After the government's failure at Egghead, Imu punishes Saturn by eliminating him, and Saint Figarland Garling, one of the most powerful Celestial Dragons, takes his seat among the Gorosei. Saturn's fate shows that in Imu's eyes even the Elders are expendable.

Why Saturn matters to the story

Saturn is the first Elder to get a real antagonist role and to reveal what the Gorosei can do. Through him, the Egghead arc lifts part of the veil on the top of the World Government and sets up the endgame of One Piece.
