Saturn in pop culture
Saturn in pop culture means far more than the planet: the name was given to a Sega video game console (1994), a General Motors car brand (1985–2010), a guardian in Sailor Moon, a 1964 song by Georges Brassens, a 2024 single by SZA, one of the Five Elders in One Piece, and the Saturn Awards for science fiction, fantasy and horror film. This section covers each of them and why the name was chosen.

Why so many things are called Saturn
Two images compete for the name. One is the planet: the only one whose rings show up in a small telescope, instantly recognizable, and long the visual shorthand for "space" and "the future." That is the Saturn chosen by engineers, marketers and tech brands. The other is the god: the Roman Saturn, identified with the Greek Cronus who devoured his children, lord of time, old age and melancholy. That Saturn turns up in poetry and in darker fiction.
Almost everything in this section plays on one face or the other, and sometimes both.
Video games: the Sega Saturn
The Sega Saturn followed the Genesis (Mega Drive) into the 32-bit console war. Launched in Japan at the end of 1994, it did well there but was overtaken by the PlayStation in the West, hurt by a rushed surprise launch in the United States and a twin-processor design that developers found hard to program. Its library, though, has become a cult favorite: Panzer Dragoon Saga, Nights into Dreams, Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes all appear in our guide to the best Sega Saturn games. The name fits a run of astronomical code names at Sega in the mid-1990s, from Jupiter (an abandoned cartridge-based variant) to Neptune (a Genesis and 32X combo that never shipped).
Cars: GM's Saturn brand
In 1985 General Motors created Saturn, billed as "a different kind of company" built to take on small Japanese cars. A dedicated plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, no-haggle pricing and dent-resistant polymer body panels earned it unusually loyal owners, until the brand was shut down in the wake of GM's 2009 bankruptcy. The name nods to the Saturn V rocket of the Apollo program. Browse every Saturn car model, from the Saturn Sky roadster to the Saturn Vue SUV.
Manga and anime
In Sailor Moon, Sailor Saturn, Hotaru Tomoe, is the guardian of destruction and rebirth, a faithful echo of the god who destroys so that a new cycle can begin. In One Piece, Saint Jaygarcia Saturn is one of the Five Elders who rule the world from the shadows; Eiichiro Oda named all five after the planets visible to the naked eye.
Songs: from Brassens to SZA
Sixty years separate the two best-known songs with the name. For Georges Brassens, "Saturne" (1964) is the god of time who marks the face of a beloved woman, and the singer insists she is all the more beautiful for it: one of the tenderest love songs in his catalog. For SZA, "Saturn" (2024) turns the planet into a dreamed-of elsewhere where life might be better than on an Earth that feels absurd. The planet also inspired concert music, notably the "Saturn" movement of Holst's The Planets.
Film: the Saturn Awards
Since 1972 the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films has presented the Saturn Awards, whose trophy depicts the ringed planet. They honor genres long overlooked by the major ceremonies. For the planet's image on screen and in illustration, see also Saturn in science fiction.
FAQ
Why is the Sega console called Saturn?
Sega was using astronomical code names at the time, such as Neptune (a Genesis/32X combo that was never released) and Jupiter (an abandoned cartridge variant). It is often said that the Saturn was also Sega's sixth console, matching the sixth planet, but that count depends on which machines you include.
Does the Saturn car brand still exist?
No. General Motors closed Saturn in 2010 after a planned sale to Penske Automotive Group collapsed in September 2009. Parts and service are handled through GM dealers.
Is Brassens' "Saturne" about the planet?
No. It is about the Roman god of time, pictured as an old craftsman who ages everything he touches. The song is a love song about growing old together.
Who is Saturn in One Piece?
Saint Jaygarcia Saturn is one of the Five Elders (Gorosei), the highest visible authority of the World Government. His full name was only revealed in 2023.
